Article summary

Member segmentation makes it possible to define a selection of members by combining demographic and geographic member-based variables with sales history for members. A member segment can be exported, used for a member campaign or to get to know members better.

When you open the “Member Segments” view, a table will appear with an overview of registered member segments. This is where you can create new member segments and view/edit member segment details.

New segment

Create a new segment by clicking the New Segment button in the "Member segments” view.

You can also click the +1 button for the Member Segment submenu under the Customers module.

This will open the “New segment” dialog.

Name: register a name for the segment. “New segment” will be suggested as the new name. The name can be overridden when needed.
Description: You can enter a text describing the segment-
Segments on household: Tick if the segmentation is to be done at household level, i.e. for all members in the household.

Click Create to create a new segment. The segment details view opens. In this view, you define the target group by selecting segmentation terms and adding one or more selected groups to include/exclude. On the right of the view there is an information panel showing the segment’s details. This is updated as the selection criteria are specified.

For information on the different fields and function, see Member segment details.

Examples of using member segmentation

Example 1

Include members less than 30 years of age (A) or members who have purchased items from the item group “Bakeri” in the last year. (B) Exclude members who have purchased “Choklad” (C). Sales period is added and set by default to “In the past year” when adding a selection criterion related to a sales period.

A or B, minus C

The segment details view will look like this.

Example 2

Include members with “Home store” — “in the list” 1 - Demo test store (A). Also include members who have Avg. sales amount greater than 300 and more than twice in store 1 - Demo test store (B).

A or B

The segment details view will look like this.

Example 3

Include female who have purchased item group – All, over the last year (A) and whose purchase exceeded NOK 300 in the last six months (B).

A and B

The segment details view will look like this.

Example 4

If you want to choose members with low sales over the past year, then you need to adjust your thinking. The selection criterion “Sold less than 100” would have given us members who have shopped but spent less than NOK 100. This is why we must exclude these to get the desired result.

Exclude members who have bought for more than NOK 100 over the past year (A) and who have also bought products more than twice (B).

Exclude members in A and B

The segment details view will look like this.

Example 5: Selection criteria in same selection group

Selection criteria contained in the same selection group will always be combined so that members must satisfy all the criteria.

The example below shows a segment of men who have purchased items in item group 550, 2940 or 524 in the last year. Selection criteria for sales which is in the same selection group select members based on their purchasing history. That means that each member must be checked to see whether the sales meet the criteria, not whether the member meets those criteria. In other words: If a man bought item in item group 300 yesterday and bought item in item group 550 two years ago, he will not be included in the segment below.

To join the segment below, his sales must have bought items within the last year, and these must include items in item group 550, 2940 or 524.
